Feb 29, 2008 Steve down on the Yarra talking rubbish
Steve was on the banks of Yarra this morning and found heaps of bottles and cans. So Steve stopped a couple of people to ask them what they thought about introducing a "cash-for-trash" container deposit scheme that has operated in South Australia - which would see drink container recycling lifted dramatically from 35% to 85% while allowing community groups like Scouts to make millions. Now that’s a win for the environment and a win for the community.

Nov 15, 2007 Remember Camphor Close? Steve checks out how residents feel about the election
Steve was out yesterday door-knocking in Camphor Close in the outer eastern Melbourne suburb of Lysterfield, in the electorate of Aston. Three weeks before the 2004 election, John and Janette Howard took a busload of journalists to Camphor Close to chat to a young family about interest rates. Steve thought it would be good to pay a visit himself to see how residents are feeling this time round. In this video blog, Steve is chatting to a young mum about the issues that matter to her.

Steve was on the campaign trail in Bendigo in country Victoria today …. And still there is no media pack following him around. Oct 29, 2007 Let's give Carers a break - Steve on the campaign trail in Bendigo, Victoria
Steve was on the campaign trail in Bendigo in country Victoria today but, unlike Mr Howard and Mr Rudd, there was no media pack following him around. Steve's video blog features real people talking about the issues that really affect them, like struggling to make ends meet. In this blog, Steve chats about Family First's Carers policy, to give full-time carers four weeks' annual leave, like paid workers receive. Too often we forget that caring is constant and carers don’t get a day off or annual leave like the rest of us do.

Oct 25, 2007 Ripped-off by the banks - Steve street talking with Brian in Warragul, Gippsland
Steve was on the campaign trail in Warragul today and unlike Mr Howard and Mr Rudd, Steve doesn't have a hoard of media following him around, but Steve's blogs have real people in them on real issues. This blog is no exception as Steve was on one of his of his regular street talks he bumped into Brian who had, you guessed it - just been ripped-off with another $50 bank penalty fee!

Oct 23, 2007 Real choice in childcare - Steve visits a mum to chat about childcare
Steve was on the campaign trail in Werribee today and unlike Mr Howard and Mr Rudd, Steve doesn't have a hoard of media following him around, but Steve's blogs have real people in them on real issues. This time Steve chatting with a Mum about giving all Australian parents the same childcare support, whatever childcare they choose. Many parents would love to have in-home childcare if they could pay a grandparent or other relative, or perhaps a neighbour or friend, to look after their kids. Parents know who is best to look after their kids so let’s give parents real choice.

Sep 06, 2007 Steve looks for Fire Blight in an apple and pear orchard
Steve was in Victoria's Gouburn Valley region today, chatting to fruit growers and industry representatives about how fire blight could be introduced into Australia, just as easily as horse flu was. On Steve's tour of an apple and pear orchid, Steve discovers just how difficult fire blight is to detect. Horse flu has wreaked havoc on the racing industry and the livelihoods of thousands of families. Yet, unlike horse flu, fire blight is permanent. Australia’s $450 million apple and pear industry, and hundreds of thousands of growers’ livelihoods are at risk by allowing potentially infected apples into Australia.

Aug 30, 2007 Steve on the street talking about the bank penalty fee rip-off
Steve was in Cranbourne doing street talk again and this time he caught up with Ted who had a story about outrageous bank penalty fees. Steve found that most people are frustrated with the bank penalty fee rip-off and were keen to hear that finally someone was prepared to do something rather than just talk about it. Steve shared how Family First has proposed new laws that would mean bank penalty fees are for cost recovery only - and guess what, people said "about time!".

July 31, 2007 Steve at the petrol bowser talking about lower petrol prices
Steve was at the petrol bowser again, this time in Wangaratta, chatting to motorists about how can we get cheaper petrol. Guess what he found? Yep cheaper prices will come from cutting the obscene level of petrol tax and by having real competition. Thats why FAMILY FIRST is calling for stronger trade practices laws that will ensure more competition in petrol and grocery retailing and a 10 cent a litre cut in petrol tax.

July 19, 2007 Steve chats to motorists about stopping the petrol tax rip-off
Steve was in the outer Melbourne suburbs of Berwick and Narre Warren today, chatting to motorists at the petrol bowser about FAMILY FIRST's plans to cut the petrol tax by 10 cents a litre. The views of the mother in Steve's videoblog are typical of the many opinions shared with Steve; that families rely heavily on their cars and that petrol pain not only puts huge pressure on the family budget, but also on relationships. Family life suffers as activities like taking the kids to sport or music lessons get cut.

That is why FAMILY FIRST has introduced legislation to protect Jetstar from foreign ownership and stop jobs and operations from going offshore.

Feb 27, 2007 The dangers travelling home after a long day in Parliament
You wouldn't read about …… on Monday after a late night sitting in Parliament, Steve was on his way home in a 'Comcar' (Commonwealth car) when the driver collided with a "bouncing kangaroo". Steve and the driver are ok, the car is not good and the kangaroo seemed to hop away with probably a bit of a headache. The irony is that that same day in Parliament FAMILY FIRST was introducing a Bill to protect the "flying kangaroo" - that is to protect Jetstar so jobs and operations remain in Australia.
Then, the next night, Steve was heading home again when the driver was forced to make an emergency stop in nearly the exact place as the incident with the kangaroo. This time it was because of a fierce Canberra hail storm. Steve and the driver were trapped in the car for more than 20 minutes while large hail stones pounded the vehicle. All part of the 'adventure' of being a federal politician!

Oct 31, 2006 Dr Carr-Gregg talks about kid net addiction
At our last FAMILY FORUM our guest was Dr Michael Carr-Gregg, a prominent psychologist and leading authority on parenting and raising children. Dr Carr-Gregg spoke about the challenges facing parents today, in particular the Internet and kids addiction to it, childhood obesity and bullying.
An engaging speaker, Dr Carr-Gregg told the audience that 14 per cent of our population are young Australians, but they represent 100 per cent of our future. He also said: "Young people are told so much, yet know so little."
Our previous guest speaker was financial expert and media money commentator Kevin Bailey who spoke about our materialistic culture and rising levels of family debt and provided sound advice about saving and keeping financial matters simple.
FAMILY FIRST leader Steve Fielding hosts our Family Forums, which are held to stimulate discussion about key issues and the values of ordinary Australian families, not the self-appointed elites. The popular Family Forums have been well attended and we have received such tremendous feedback we will be continuing them in 2007. FAMILY FIRST invites and encourages you to come along to our next Family Forum to enjoy a social evening of good food and stimulating conversation and debate.
Here is a short video clip of Dr Michael Carr-Gregg.

Sept 14, 2006 FAMILY FIRST says euthanasia is no solution
FAMILY FIRST opposes deliberately ending a person’s life or helping them to end their own life. We have already seen how far the euthanasia agenda goes. Dr Philip Nitschke has already moved quickly to assisted suicide, as well as giving depressed and suicidal people the means to end their own lives. This is not something that the Australian community believes is right.

Sept 13, 2006 FAMILY FIRST standing up for Independent Service Stations
This issue is about disclosing discounts and making it quite clear to anyone wanting to buy petrol exactly what conditions or criteria they need to meet to get certain discounts. Rather than allowing discounts to be hidden and not shown, this is about making sure we have an open and level playing field for all service stations, including independents, so that they know what they have to do to get the very best discounts. Knowing the role that independent service stations play within the market in keeping prices low, I think this is extremely important.

Sept 13, 2006 Why independent petrol service stations are important
FAMILY FIRST wants the lowest petrol prices for families and small businesses, which is why FAMILY FIRST will act to ensure no company selling petrol can own or operate more than 25 per cent of service stations. To have real competition we need strong independent petrol stations, not just the oil giants getting even bigger.
