Steve was in Victoria's Gouburn Valley region today, chatting to fruit growers and industry representatives about how fire blight could be introduced into Australia, just as easily as horse flu was. On Steve's tour of an apple and pear orchid, Steve discovers just how difficult fire blight is to detect. Horse flu has wreaked havoc on the racing industry and the livelihoods of thousands of families. Yet, unlike horse flu, fire blight is permanent. Australia’s $450 million apple and pear industry, and hundreds of thousands of growers’ livelihoods are at risk by allowing potentially infected apples into Australia.
