Liberal senators should consider jumping ship before the Coalition sinks under the pressure of the upcoming vote on an emission trading scheme, Family First Leader Senator Steve Fielding said today.‪

“The Coalition is like a sinking ship without any lifeboats at the moment,” Senator Fielding said.‪

“I’m offering those in the Liberal Party a lifeline if they want to delay the vote on an ETS until after Copenhagen, I just hope they hop on board.‪

“The Liberal party is in danger of losing their financial credibility if it caves in and votes for an ETS before Copenhagen, so if I was a Liberal senator I’d be looking to jump ship with some dignity.‪

I suggested to the Leader of the Opposition the idea of giving his Senators a conscience vote on the government’s ETS, but that was met with quite a bit of resistance.‪

“It is economically reckless for Australia to address climate change before we know what the big emitters in the US, China and India are doing as our jobs will end up overseas.‪

“If Mr Turnbull wants to join the PM in being economically reckless that’s his prerogative, but if I was in the Liberal Party I wouldn’t be too happy.‪

“I can’t believe the PM and now the Leader of the Opposition wants to put at risk thousands of jobs and our economy by voting on this scheme before Copenhagen.”
