Put Your Family First In The Senate

Press Releases August 26 2007

Come on! Let’s give families and small business a fairer go

We all know big business has a voice in Canberra. We all know the unions have a voice in Canberra. We all know the environment has a voice in Canberra. But families and small business do not have a strong voice in Canberra.

“Most people feel uncomfortable when the Government of the day has control of the Senate because they use this power unfairly,” Family First leader Steve Fielding said today. “But what Australians do like is having a political party like Family First that can stand in the middle of the two big political parties and apply some good old fashion common sense. Imagine if decisions in Canberra were based on common sense – surely we would all get a fairer go.”

Senator Fielding was speaking at the announcement at Parliament House in Canberra of Family First’s Senate team for the election: Tony Bates (SA), Jeff Buchanan (Qld), Andrew Markwell (NSW), Jacquie Petrusma (Tas), Gary Plumridge (Vic) and Linda Rose (WA).

“Families are under stress,” Senator Fielding said. “More needs to be done to help people make ends meet. More needs to be done to protect our kids. More needs to be done to help our young Australians get a fairer a go so they too can enjoy the rewards of hard work”.

“Family First wants to give Australians a fairer go by:
• Stopping the bank penalty fee rip-off, ensuring fees are cost recovery only;
• Giving families relief at the bowser by cutting petrol tax by 10 cents a litre;
• Keeping grocery and petrol prices lower with real competition by outlawing predatory pricing;
• Giving back to all families their public holidays, meal breaks, overtime and penalty rates;
• Protecting all kids from internet pornography by mandatory ISP filtering;
• Making homes more affordable by allowing first home buyers to claim interest on their home loans as a tax deduction, as investors do; and,
• Tackling binge drinking by encouraging a responsible drinking culture.”
